Kononovich brothers courtroom appeal

“Our case is completely fabricated from start to finish"

The trial of Mikhail and Alexander Kononovich began in the Solomensky District Court of Kyiv on July 1st, without the physical presence of the defenders but via teleconference.

Under the pretext of false and groundless accusations, the two brothers, members of the Leninist Communist Youth Union of Ukraine  were arrested on March 7th, 2022 and tortured in a Kiev detention center.

Since then, numerous Communist Parties and Youth organisations from all over the world, including the World Federation of Democratic Youth (WFDY) have demanded their immediate release. The EU Parliament Group of the Communist Party of Greece (KKE) has already submitted two written questions (first and second) to the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs concerning the case of Kononovich brothers.

In their first speech to the courtroom, Mikhail and Alexander talked about the fabricated nature of the accusations, expressed appreciation for the international solidarity and called EU Parliament's deputies and the media throughout Europe to attend the trial.

More specifically, Kononovich brothers proceeded to the following statement: “Our case is completely fabricated from start to finish. What are we charged with? Pro-Belarussian views are being charged. We are being tried for our views. What kind of democracy can we talk about?

"I want to appeal to the European left, to the Federation of Democratic Youth. Thank you, comrades. You are holding actions in Europe near the Ukrainian embassies in support of us so that they let us go, thank you very much. Together we will win!

"Continue solidarity and protest in our support around the world, on all continents - in Europe, in Latin America, in other countries, because if the international community does not put pressure on the regime, we will rot in this prison.

"And one more thing, I want to appeal to the European left. Comrades, we appeal to you and we want the deputies of the European Parliament to visit Ukraine and be present at our court session. So that they see with their own eyes and tell the whole world how the court is arranged.

"We also call on the European media to also participate so that the whole world can see the face of the regime".

Protest! Send letters and emails to your local Embassy or Consulate of Ukraine:

Ukraine peace talks: seeing through the blizzard of confusion and spin

by Theo Russell Since the historic summit in Alaska between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin and their top level ministers, our media has been flooded by a tidal wave of deception and diversion, alongside a new campaign of Banderite inspired anti-Russian demonisation. The entire world recognises – with the possible exception of senior British military and intelligence chiefs – that NATO has lost the war in Ukraine, leaving total defeat or a negotiated settlement the only possible ways to end the conflict.  As of now, Trump’s position is that a comprehensive, lasting peace deal is preferable to a ceasefire, and that secondary sanctions are off the table. As we know Trump can flip his policies on a whim, but there is reason for optimism that genuinely he wants a settlement in Ukraine. This shift in Washington has thrown Europe’s leaders into a state of panic. The leaders of the ‘Coalition of the Willing’ are facing a political disaster on a massive scale, and as a result they are desp...

Nato press gangs in Ukraine

by a Kiev observer   American imperialism continues to ruin all states that call themselves democratic and independent. In fact, many countries have already lost their independence. Some lost it along with their currency; others by giving away their army. The White House continues to hide its financial greed behind the illusion of possible global protection. At the same time, regular workers and civil servants have difficulty understanding what is really behind the foolish statements of “collective security” peddled by the bourgeois media. An example of the realities that every worker will face in the near future is in the war in Ukraine. Despite all the statements we hear from Western media, the war in Ukraine was started by imperialism, and the reason it did it was to make more money. This war, however, has also exposed the steps and measures that modern capitalist governments under Nato command have taken in Ukraine, and shows what they will do in their own countries in the futu...

Ukraine: A Search for Identity and Freedom

by John Maryon Russians, Ukrainians and Belarusians are predominantly from the East Slav sub-group of the Slavic people.  Crimean Tatars form an important ethnic group of the population of Crimea.  The fertile lands of mineral rich Ukraine were for centuries shared between the Poles and the Mongols.  By 1500 the Ottoman empire had expanded and taken over South East Ukraine and Crimea.  In 1654, following years of conflict with the Polish Lithuanian Commonwealth, the Cossack leader of Ukraine pledged allegiance to the Czardom of Russia in exchange of protection. Russian influence increased and in 1797 Catherine the Great established the port city of Odessa and the region became an important part of the Russian Empire.  Today most people have heard of the Crimean War, Florence Nightingale, Balaclava and the Charge of the Light Brigade.   It was an imperialist conflict for Middle East influence between Russia and an alliance of France, Britain and Turkey....
